Favicon FAQ

What is the difference between a logo and a favicon?

A logo is the full visual identity of a brand. A favicon is a compact, square identifier designed to stay recognizable at tiny sizes.

Logo and favicon compared

A logo may include a symbol, a business name, a tagline, and other brand details. It can be horizontal, vertical, or square. A favicon has a narrower job: identify the site inside a space that is often only 16x16 or 32x32 pixels.

Can you use your logo as a favicon?

Yes, when the logo already has a simple square mark. If your logo is a long wordmark, use its symbol, first letter, or monogram instead. Keep enough empty space around the mark so the browser does not make it feel cramped.

Test the result at its final size. If two shapes merge, a letter becomes unreadable, or thin lines disappear, simplify the favicon rather than sharpening the same artwork.

A practical conversion workflow

  1. Choose the most recognizable symbol or letter from the logo.
  2. Place it on a square canvas with strong contrast.
  3. Preview it at 16x16 and 32x32 pixels.
  4. Generate PNG, ICO, and platform-specific files from the approved square source.

The Favicon Generator can crop or scale a logo into a square icon and package the common output files.
