Before you ship
Most of your visitors will never see the animation. Firefox plays it; Chrome, Edge, and Safari render the first frame. Treat motion as a bonus, not the message.
Keep the loop short and low-contrast. A favicon flickering next to a tab title reads as a notification and annoys people fast.
Upload both files to your site root, then paste the snippet into <head>.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the favicon actually animate?
In Firefox, yes. Chrome, Edge, and Safari show the first frame instead — Chrome closed its animated-favicon request as not planned. That is why this tool also gives you an ICO fallback. The animated favicon guide covers the JavaScript approach for other browsers.
Do you upload my file?
Yes. Your GIF is uploaded so the frames can be decoded and resized on the server.
Which animation size should I pick?
32px suits most tabs. Larger sizes mean a bigger file for an icon nobody sees above about 32px, so only go up if your artwork needs it.
Why does the first frame matter so much?
Every browser that will not animate shows frame one, and Google Search uses a static icon. Make frame one readable on its own.
